Treatments at Termas de Chaves benefit from increased financial support from the National Health Service

Last October, the new financial support scheme for thermal treatments prescribed under the National Health System (SNS) came into force. This initiative reinforces the recognition of the therapeutic value of natural mineral waters and promotes access for a greater number of citizens to healthcare prescribed and supervised by doctors, whose effectiveness has been proven in various chronic and functional diseases.

The new features are the maximum co-payment limit, which increases from €95 to €110 per user, as well as the validity of the prescription, which was previously 1 month and will become 1 year in 2026.

Main aspects of the new scheme:

– 35% co-payment on the total cost of duly prescribed thermal treatments, with an annual co-payment ceiling of €110 per user.

– Treatment program lasting a minimum of 12 days and a maximum of 21 days.

– Prescription by the family doctor of the National Health Service, with the hydrologist of the thermal establishment being responsible for defining the respective treatment plan.

The measure thus becomes a relevant opportunity to strengthen the integration of Termas de Chaves into the National Health System, promote medical and physiotherapeutic procedures using thermal water, and facilitate the population’s access to this care.
