Chaves breathes new life into the Historic Center with the “Digital Commercial Neighborhood” Project
The historic center of Chaves is entering a new era. The city in the Trás-os-Montes region is implementing the ambitious project “Digital Commercial District of the Historic Center of Chaves,” which aims to transform this emblematic area into a vibrant, technologically advanced open-air shopping center with a strong local identity.
Traditional commerce with cutting-edge technology
Promoted by the Municipality of Chaves, in conjunction with local merchants, this pioneering project combines heritage preservation with digital innovation. The goal is clear: to make the historic center a more attractive, dynamic, and functional space, not only for those who visit it, but also for those who live and work there.
The “Digital Commercial District” represents a strategic opportunity for local commerce, with solutions designed to strengthen the competitiveness of small businesses, bring them closer to today’s consumers, and prepare them for the challenges of the future.
According to the local authority, the total investment amounts to €1,495,375, of which €1,082,375 is financed through the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) and by IAPMEI – Institute for Support to Small and Medium-sized Enterprises and Innovation. The initiative also has the collaboration of ACISAT, ADRAT, PROCENTRO, and GEMC.
What is being prepared?
The project envisages the implementation of an innovative set of tools and infrastructure, including: New visual identity for the neighborhood: Creation of a unified graphic image with its own logo, colors, and materials.
Interactive digital billboards: Information panels at strategic points in the neighborhood.
Local marketplace: Digital platform for merchants to advertise and sell their products online, with delivery or in-store pickup.
Smart lockers: These will allow orders to be picked up at more flexible times.
Environmental sensors: Collection of data on air quality, noise, temperature, and foot traffic.
Digital parking system: Real-time information on available spaces.
Augmented reality in commerce: Interactive promotional activities using immersive technologies.
Local memories and content: Provision of digital information on the history, traditions, and personalities of Chaves.
With this project, Chaves aims to create a more connected, sustainable urban center that is ready to respond to the demands of the digital age without losing its identity.
